Laura Kurij
VOCALS
Laura started singing at an early age, and has always been heavily involved in music throughout school life, starting with her debut vocal performance aged 7 alongside Chaz & Dave on stage at the ‘City Varieties’ in Leeds! Laura began to develop her love for performance whilst working her way through various instruments of the orchestra, discovering a talent and love for the bassoon. After finishing school, Laura went on to do a music degree at the University of Hull, majoring in vocal performance, followed by a PGCE in secondary music. Now as a fully qualified music teacher, Laura works as a singing and keyboard teacher throughout West Yorkshire.
Laura has much experience performing onstage with various ensembles in many different styles, including jazz, soul, and pop/rock function bands. She takes much influence from female artists such as Jill Scott, Aretha Franklin and India Arie.
Mick Lawless
GUITARS
Mick began learning to play guitar at the age of 8 after being impressed by his Dad's vintage guitar and collection of Beatles records. After serving his apprenticeship playing in pubs, Mick quickly found himself in demand as a first-call dep. guitarist for a number of established function bands, which has taken him across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, playing many different styles of music.
Mick has taught guitar, gigged regularly as a solo artist and with his own trio; and also played in an original band that enjoyed exposure on Radio 1 and MTV, and gained glowing reviews while supporting high-profile, touring bands.
Mark Ward
KEYBOARDS
Mark enjoys writing electronic music and playing a variety of styles, and describes his musical interests and inspirations as "eclectic". After finishing music college, Mark worked for one of the world’s largest and most respected musical instrument manufacturers, and played with a number of bands before starting evolver with drummer, Rich, quickly joined by the rest of the current line-up. In his spare time, Mark enjoys travelling and technology, and is a self-confessed “geek”.
Rich Wilson
DRUMS
Rich started playing drums at an early age while still at primary school. While his overall passion is for funk, rock and R’n’B, his musical roots lie firmly in the more traditional genres. He started off in local marching brass bands, very quickly progressing on to be lead snare drum player, and gaining many impressive achievements and competition-wins along the way. His successful drumming career has already taken him to such respected venues as the N.E.C., The Royal Albert Hall and the N.I.A. in Birmingham.
Rich is one of the most sought after drummers in the North of England, and his time is currently divided between professional playing (live and session) and high-end tuition: Rich owns and runs the nationally-renowned private music school, RAW Studios.
Matt Sandford
BASS
Matthew has always been involved with music; playing clarinet and piano in school before discovering some old Beatles records, and, at the age of 15, being inspired by John Lennon to take up the electric guitar. He formed a school rock band, but soon realised that guitarists were two-a-penny. However, he also discovered that very few could play bass, and make it sound any good...
So, he decided to step up to the challenge.
Matthew says: "I love listening to the powerful kind of bass that you can feel through your feet". He has enjoyed a fruitful professional career, playing for many years in successful blues, soul, disco and pop bands. Matthew is inspired by any modern music which uses live bass, but especially: Motown (James Jamerson), early Jamiroquai (Stuart Zender), Incognito (Randy Hope-Taylor) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Flea).
